Eat Well, Travel Right

Planning your summer vacation? Eating healthy, while traveling with your family, can be both difficult and expensive. We, at Southern Specialties, want you to enjoy healthy habits while saving some bucks during your travels this year!

For plane or train rides:

  • Sick of the same old peanuts? Grab some hummus and nut butter snack packs to dip pretzels or crackers into
  • Try roasted and spiced chickpeas
  • Create a DIY trail mix with dried fruit and some assorted nuts
  • Bring along a bag of sunflower seeds (unsalted)
  • Grab a bag of baked veggie chips
  • Enjoy natural energy bars (the ones with 5 ingredients or less)

For car rides:

  • Bring a cooler or two (depending on length of trip) that keeps food cold for days! You can store fresh sandwiches, fruits, veggies, dips, and drinks in here
  • Use storage containers instead of bags for storing food. It is eco-friendly since they are reusable and create no waste (make sure to bring some empty ones, just in case)

PC: Wholefully

  • Invest in these highly affordable and biodegradable bamboo sporks to avoid plastic
  • Do NOT wash your produce until you’re ready to eat it…they are prone to going bad quicker when washed (*bring a reusable, filtered water bottle to drink from and wash fresh fruits and veggies)
  • Make sure to pack some tasty sandwiches, but to pack the sliced tomatoes and condiments separately to prevent soggy bread
  • Bring fruit and veggies that hold up well and have a harder exterior (ex: oranges, avocados, starfruit, sugar snap peas, snow peas)
  • Try nut milks in a carton (in the non-refrigerated section of the grocery store); they are long-lasting and good for getting your calcium and eating some whole grain breakfast cereal on the go

With these easy travel tips, you will save time and money! More importantly, your energy levels will be high and your body well nourished. We wish you all safe, happy, and healthy travels!
